Afternoon tea on the Wirral from £16.95 in Wallasey Village to Hillbark and Thornton Hall: 7 places with prices, times, booking rules and hygiene ratings.
For afternoon tea on the Wirral most people land on the two country house hotels, Hillbark at Frankby for the themed teas and Thornton Hall at Thornton Hough for the Great Wirral Afternoon Tea, served every day; on Nova in Heswall for a cheaper restaurant tea; and on Fleur Ashley in Wallasey Village, which stops sit-in service on 23 December. Every entry checked against the venue’s own site on 27 October 2026.
We have not had afternoon tea at these places for this guide, and nothing here is a review. Each entry sets out what the venue publishes about its afternoon tea: what is on the stand, the price, when it is served and how to book, then adds the Food Standards Agency (FSA) hygiene rating. Where a venue does not publish something, we say so rather than guess. Prices and menus change with the seasons, so check before you book.
Country house hotels
Hillbark Hotel, Frankby
Hillbark is in Hill Bark, the black-and-white timbered house in Royden Park that is listed Grade II* (Historic England list entry 1242748); the Buildings of England series calls it “one of the most notable Victorian essays in half-timbered design anywhere in the country”. Its afternoon tea page describes loose-leaf teas, sandwiches and savouries, then pastries, desserts and plain and fruit scones with homemade jam, lemon curd and clotted cream. The teas are themed through the year; November’s is The Nutcracker, with pigs in blankets, turkey and cranberry, and a mulled wine macaron. That menu lists afternoon tea at £70 and £35 for those 15 and younger, English sparkling at £82, Champagne at £86 and Contessa’s Ultimate Afternoon Tea at £100; it does not say whether those prices are per person, and says tea is served from 12pm to 5pm. A themed cocktail or mocktail is a £10 supplement. All its afternoon teas can be booked in advance through the enquiry form. Hillbark also delivers afternoon tea boxes free to Wirral postcodes. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 23 June 2026). Royden Park, Frankby, CH48 1NP.
Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa, Thornton Hough
The hotel calls its tea The Great Wirral Afternoon Tea and says it is served on William Edwards bone china. It costs £33.50 per person, £40 with a glass of Prosecco and £45 with Lanson Champagne, and is available every day between 12pm and 4pm. The autumn 2026 menu offers a sweet version (coffee and pecan cake, salted caramel Viennese whirl, mini pumpkin pie, fruit and plain scones) or a savoury one (smoked haddock and cheddar croquette, sausage roll, duck rillette, cheddar scones), both with finger sandwiches, and the house jams are made by the hotel’s pastry chef. A vegan afternoon tea is available. A Festive Afternoon Tea runs from 1 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 at £34.50 per person. The hotel strongly advises booking ahead, online or on 0151 336 3938. Hygiene rating 4 (FSA, 12 November 2025). Neston Road, Thornton Hough, CH63 1JF.
Restaurants and tea rooms
Nova, Heswall
Nova is a restaurant on Telegraph Road, and its Afternoon Tea at Nova costs £22 per person, or £30 with a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée English sparkling wine. The menu lists chicken salad, cucumber and cream cheese, and egg and cress sandwiches, quiche lorraine and a Nova sausage roll, then fruit and traditional scones with jam and clotted cream, a macaroon, fruit tart, carrot cake and strawberry posset, with teas and coffees. It is served between 12pm and 2.30pm. It must be booked at least 24 hours ahead by phone on 0151 342 9959 or by email to info@novarestaurant.co.uk; the website’s table booking cannot take afternoon tea. Give any dietary needs when booking. Hygiene rating 4 (FSA, 20 March 2025). 131 to 133 Telegraph Road, Heswall. Our listing.
Fleur Ashley Tea Room, Wallasey Village
Fleur Ashley calls itself “the home of authentic award winning Afternoon Tea on Wirral”, though it does not name the award. It is closing. Its website says Wednesday 23 December 2026 is the final day of sit-in table service; from January to March 2027 it will open only for takeaway collections and gift voucher redemptions, and it closes for good in late March 2027. Until then the adult afternoon tea is £16.95: ham, cream cheese and cucumber, and egg mayonnaise finger sandwiches, a quiche of the day, a side salad, scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, and leaf tea or cafetière coffee. There are vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan versions and a children’s tea for ages 2 to 10; say which when booking. The menu is set, and changes may carry a small charge. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm, kitchen closing at 3pm. Call 07919 092 812. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 27 January 2026). 258 Wallasey Village, CH45 3HB.
Tudor Rose Tea Rooms, Port Sunlight
A traditional tea room in Port Sunlight’s former village post office, opposite the station. The building, 88 and 88A Greendale Road, was designed by Grayson and Ould, built in 1891 and is Grade II listed (Historic England list entry 1343479). The tea room has no website of its own; the Port Sunlight Village Trust lists it as serving afternoon teas, sandwiches and cakes, open 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 3pm on Sunday, and links to its Facebook page. No menu or prices are published online. Hygiene rating 4 (FSA, 15 January 2026). 88 Greendale Road, Port Sunlight, CH62 4XD.
Benty Farm Tearooms, Thurstaston
Benty Farm is a tearoom on a small farmstead on Thurstaston Common, and is the place for a cream tea rather than a full tiered afternoon tea. Its online shop sells a cream tea at £9 and an Afternoon Tea Box at £20, for collection Wednesday to Sunday between 11am and 4pm or delivery up to 10 miles for £5; order by 5pm the day before. The tearoom is reached on foot only: its plan your visit page says to park on School Lane, off Thurstaston Road, and walk about 400 metres down the farm track, or follow the footpath from Royden Park. It opens 10am to 2pm Wednesday to Friday and 10am to 4pm at weekends, and advises checking its social pages first. Call 0151 648 2746. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 30 December 2024). 3a School Lane, Thurstaston, CH61 0HH.
Just over the border
Inglewood Manor, Ellesmere Port
An Edwardian country house hotel on the Wirral peninsula but in Cheshire West and Chester rather than Wirral borough. Its afternoon tea page offers tea in the lounge, the restaurant or on the terrace: finger sandwiches, cakes, biscuits and pastries, and a scone with jam and cream. The Traditional Afternoon Tea is £24.50 per person, the Sparkling Afternoon Tea with a glass of Prosecco is from £32 per person, and a children’s tea is £15 on request. It is served daily from 12pm to 3.30pm, and the hotel recommends booking ahead, especially at weekends and on bank holidays, through its online booking. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 10 March 2026). Badgers Rake Lane, Ellesmere Port, CH66 8PF.
How we chose
These are the Wirral places people search for when they want afternoon tea, picked from the public record rather than on taste: a published afternoon tea menu or a listing by the people who run the building, the venue’s standing (two of them are in listed buildings) and the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating. Nothing here is rated below 4. Visit Wirral’s own afternoon tea list names the same hotels and Fleur Ashley. We left out the Leverhulme Hotel in Port Sunlight, whose website we could not reach on 27 October, and places that serve tea only at occasional events. Prices are taken from the menus each venue publishes and may have moved; seasonal menus change every few months.
