West Kirby shop Sybil's will close after Christmas, ending ten years of trading, as a town group bids for £20,000 to bring more shoppers into the town.
Sybil’s, the West Kirby clothes and accessories shop, is to close after ten years. The owners announced it on the shop’s own Instagram account on Wednesday 28 October.
The shop will stay open until Christmas. “After ten wonderful years we have made the difficult decision to close Sybil’s,” the post says. “We will be open until Christmas and then take some holidays.”
The owners give their reason plainly. “This has not been an easy decision but we will be stepping away to spend more time with our families,” they wrote. They thanked customers who had “become such good friends over the years”.
The quick answer
- What: Sybil’s in West Kirby is closing.
- When: it trades until Christmas 2026, then shuts.
- Why: the owners say they are stepping away to spend more time with their families.
- Where to check: the shop’s own Instagram page.
A town that has lost clothing shops
The closure lands in a town centre that has already changed a lot. One West Kirby, a community interest company that works with local businesses, published a town centre study in November 2025. It covered the three years from 2022 to 2025.
Its headline findings:
- more than 50 businesses closed in those three years
- only 41 new businesses opened to replace them
- the number of vacant units doubled
- clothing shops fell by 45%
The study described a shift from traditional retail to service businesses. Sybil’s is a clothing shop, the category that shrank most.
The £20,000 bid to bring shoppers back
One West Kirby has also entered the town in a national competition. It submitted an entry to Let’s Celebrate Towns, run by Visa with Nationwide, in the Community Pride category. The entry is called Love West Kirby: High Street to Coast.
If it wins, the group says the money would pay for:
- new “discovery routes” on the town’s history, food, creativity and health, with heritage displays and QR codes in local businesses
- a paid Young Ambassador scheme, giving local young people training and work experience
- a network of “Welcome Partner” businesses
- better maps, signs and trails linking the station, the high street, Marine Lake and the coast
The group said the entry had the backing of local councillors and supportive words from Paula Basnett, the leader of Wirral Council. It also said that “the odds are challenging”, and that several of the projects could go ahead through other funding even if it loses.
How the competition works
Each of the five category winners gets a £20,000 grant, according to Nationwide’s launch announcement. The categories are:
- High Street Revival
- Backing Local Business
- Protecting Valued Places
- Connected Places
- Community Pride
Entries closed on Sunday 25 October. A shortlist comes next, and the winners will be announced at a ceremony in Parliament on 14 December 2026. The 2025 winners were Ramsgate, Gosport, Morecambe, Swanley, Malton and Norton, and Wallsend.
A new website and a map in January
One West Kirby has launched a new website at onewestkirby.org.uk. Its Discover West Kirby section sorts the town into six themes: Sea More, Taste West Kirby, Shop Independent, Art & Soul, Tides of Time and Feel Good. There is also an interactive map of shops, cafés, walks and landmarks.
An illustrated Love West Kirby Map follows in January 2027. The group says it is being drawn by local illustrator Sam Rainford and designed with Kim Waters Design. Rotary and local councillors helped fund the map.
