Weatherhead High School in Wallasey won the contest to name Wirral's 15 new food waste lorries. All 15 names, and what happens to your food scraps.
Wirral’s food waste will soon be collected by Scrappy Happy, Baron von Banana Peel and Binny McBinface. Pupils from four schools named the borough’s 15 new food waste lorries, and Weatherhead High School in Wallasey won.
The council announced the names on Thursday. Schools pitched their ideas in presentations, as part of the council’s work with schools on cutting waste.
Weatherhead’s Eco Club chose Scrappy Happy. A member of the club told the council it was because the lorry is “picking up scraps and it’s going to be happy while doing it”.
St Peter and Paul’s Primary School were runners-up. Liscard Primary School and Dawpool CofE Primary School also took part.

The prize
Weatherhead’s Eco Club will visit Biogen’s plant in Wales. It turns household and commercial food waste into renewable energy and fertiliser. The pupils will make a film about what happens to Wirral’s food waste after it is collected.
Where your food waste goes
Weekly food waste collections started in Wirral in July. The council forecasts that about 8,000 tonnes of food waste a year will be recycled. Gas captured from it is used to make electricity.
Councillor Max Booth chairs the committee responsible for waste. He thanked residents for “embracing the new service” and said the response had been “fantastic”.
What it means for you
- Nothing changes on collection day. Your small grey caddy is still emptied every week. Our Wirral bin collection days page explains what goes in which bin.
- Look out for the names. Each of the 15 vehicles is getting one.
- Bigger bin changes are being discussed. The council is asking whether green bins should be collected every three weeks. Our consultation story explains the options and how to respond by 25 November.
