A 30-year-old cyclist died after a collision with a BMW on Hoylake Road on 1 November. Police arrested two men and a boy of 15 and want to hear from witnesses.

A cyclist has died after a collision with a car on Hoylake Road in Birkenhead. Merseyside Police says the crash happened just before 8pm on Sunday 1 November and involved a BMW and a pedal cyclist (Three arrested following fatal road traffic collision in Birkenhead, Merseyside Police).

The cyclist, whom the force describes as a 30-year-old local man, was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. He died in the early hours of Monday 2 November.

The arrests

The force says two people from inside the BMW ran away from the scene but were later arrested. A third stayed at the scene with the car.

Police arrested:

  • a 20-year-old man
  • a 19-year-old man
  • a 15-year-old boy

All three were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit. The 19-year-old and the 15-year-old were also arrested on suspicion of failing to stop and report a collision.

An arrest is not a charge. The force had published no update on the arrests by Thursday 5 November.

Where it happened

Police say the collision was on Hoylake Road between Compton Road and Hurrell Road, travelling away from Bidston station.

The appeal

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said the man’s family were being supported by specially trained officers. He thanked members of the public who stopped to help the cyclist.

The car was a black 59-plate BMW X1. Police want to hear from:

  • anyone who saw a car matching that description around Birkenhead or Bidston in the hours before the collision
  • anyone who saw either of the males leaving the scene
  • drivers and pedestrians who were in the area at the time

“Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove vital to our ongoing enquiries,” he said.
